“We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value.”
-Dr. Maya Angelou

Inclusivity Statement

North Cross School is an independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory school serving students from early childhood through twelfth grade and is dedicated to a rigorous academic curriculum that also strives to promote integrity, empathy, and responsibility to self and community. As such, we are open to anyone affirming our dedication to fostering both academic and personal integrity. North Cross School recognizes that dedicating ourselves to these goals is strengthened by intentionally creating an inclusive campus.

We view inclusivity as a goal toward which we progress and for which we consistently strive. This means that we utilize programs like Tailored Tuition, tutoring and learning centers, Global Studies, the arts, athletics, cultural exchange programs, affinity groups, and higher  education for our faculty and staff as methods toward attaining this goal of an inclusive culture. North Cross School professional development uses various measures and training to ensure our faculty and staff understand and appreciate cultural norms and traditions of all members of our community. While each of these methodologies contributes to our inclusivity in unique ways, they are not intended to be the sum of our efforts.

We recognize the strength inherent in an environment that includes diverse beliefs and cultures, abilities, nationalities, ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, and identities so we actively seek to create a school environment that is diverse and inclusive.

A Global Community

North Cross prides itself on being a globally-oriented academic community. Students become global citizens not only by learning about the world beyond their backyards but also by personal interaction with people from various backgrounds. Our international student population enriches the cultural experiences available at North Cross and makes international exposure much more than taking a Global Studies Certificate course or a family trip to a foreign country.

Our students from ages 3 through grade 12 include over 500 bright minds from many backgrounds including 19 students from different countries. We are an inclusive community who enjoys and welcomes differing perspectives, celebrates what makes each of us unique and who believes that a community that is more representative of the world at large helps prepare all of our students to make positive and thoughtful contributions to their communities when they leave. With two campuses in Shanghai, China and a sister school in Mendoza, Argentina, our students are able to exchange ideas (and passport stamps) with their counterparts on another continent.

The Horace G. Fralin Program for Global Studies encourages intellectual and personal growth through travel abroad, guest lectures and a curated set of curriculum requirements. Students who complete this program in the Upper School receive a Global Studies diploma in addition to their North Cross diploma during Commencement.

Cultural Affinity Groups

North Cross fosters an environment of inclusion and appreciates the diverse backgrounds of our families because having a student population more representative of the world at large ultimately creates a richer learning environment. Parents of similar backgrounds have formed affinity groups which aim to create a space where like-experienced individuals can come together for support, resources and plan various volunteer opportunities at the school.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN AFFINITY GROUP
The African-American Affinity Group at North Cross School aims to facilitate and encourage conversations about race and racial identity while also offering a support system for families who identify with the group. For anyone interested in more information, please contact Debbie Taylor.

MUSLIM AFFINITY GROUP
The Muslim Affinity Group at North Cross School serves to promote ties among Muslim families which will in turn strengthen their relationship with the greater NCS community, take a leadership role in promoting awareness and understanding about Islam at NCS, and provide a forum for families to convene and share thoughts, questions and concerns. For those who would like to learn more, please contact Debbie Taylor.
