I want to take a moment and reflect on the life of David Willis, an important and beloved member of the North Cross family.
David graduated from North Cross in 1977 and his life epitomized North Cross ideals. He was the devoted husband of Cydney and loving father of 5 sons: Denton ‘04, Marshall ‘06, James ‘09, Keith ‘15, and Blake ’17, all North Cross graduates.
He had three siblings attend North Cross: Elizabeth W. Revette ’74, Dr. Keith Willis ’76, and Mary Holman Willis ’80. Cousins who also attended North Cross: Cindy W. Creamer ’66, Judy W. Crump ’64 and Bo Willis (Gordon Jr., deceased)
He was a senior executive in a very successful family business, Rockydale Quarries—a business which has a reputation for looking after its employees and for giving back to the community and who played a major part in seeing this field become a reality.
David also gave back to the community - he served in leadership roles for the United Way and the Boy Scouts - and he especially gave back to the North Cross community - he served on the Board of Trustees for 16 years and was the alumni association president for 2 years before that and was a someone who supported the annual fund every year and participated in a leadership role in all the campaigns during his time here, a true philanthropist.
David was a well-rounded man—a glider pilot, a hunter, a farmer—and he was all in, at whatever he did. We all miss David dearly.
This field was made possible by the many donors who wanted to see David honored in perpetuity, and is named The Cydney and David Willis Field as we knew David would want Cydney honored as well.
The plaque was delayed in shipping and will be here next week and be permanently installed on the beautiful limestone rock donated and installed by Rockdale Quarries, near the flag pole.
Willis Field as it will now be called is where our football and lacrosse teams will compete. It was conceived with the same high quality standards we expect of our students and student-athletes.
Athletic fields go beyond playing a sport and build character and confidence in our young men and women. When future generations of athletes speak of their games at Willis Field, there will be a connection to football and lacrosse at
North Cross, as well as honoring a man who has devoted so much of his life to North Cross School.
Ladies and Gentlemen I present you:
