What's one thing your students might not know about you?
At one time I had three children attending North Cross and my oldest daughter Jennifer is now a teacher in the upper school. My oldest daughter graduated from North Cross after having also attended Kindergarten at North Cross. Her Kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Hollandsworth and Mrs. Paitsell, were in attendance at her graduation. Mrs. Hollandsworth is now one of my dear friends and a member of the CrossWalk faculty! My youngest daughter, Bailey ’16, will graduate from North Cross this spring.
There is a poster that I hung in my first classroom which states:
"Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way." - George Evans
That poster has hung in my classrooms for over three decades because I believe the quote to be true. I believe that what we do as educators impacts the life of each unique child every day.
Do you have North Cross memories that stands out?
The annual FOTA Coffeehouse event which showcases the artistic talents of North Cross students and helps to support the fine arts department is one of my favorite North Cross memories. My family and I also always enjoy North Cross theatre performances and attend the fall play and spring musical. My daughter, Bailey, has had the privilege of serving as the stage manager for several of the musicals and as well as this year’s winter drama.
What's your favorite North Cross tradition?
I love the JK Buddy tradition. At the beginning of the school year, the seniors anticipate their JK Buddy assignment and enjoy the activities and time they get to spend with the little ones throughout their senior year. It is so much fun to watch the seniors with their JK Buddies in costumes during the Halloween Parade.
As your students move through North Cross, what lessons do you want them to have learned?
I’d like for my students to enjoy reading and to become life-long learners. I hope my students will know their strengths, have personal goals, persist when things are not easy, and recognize that they have power to positively influence others.
