Education: B.A., Virginia Tech; M.Ed., Virginia Commonwealth University
Year Appointed: 2015
What is your hometown?
Roanoke, VA. I graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 2004 while my husband Jack graduated from North Cross in 2003.
What's one thing your students don't know about you?
I do CrossFit! I somehow get myself out of bed in the mornings before school and go to CrossFit. I love how the workout each day is completely different and I’m always challenged. I’m also a certified barre instructor (mix of Pilates, yoga and ballet).
Who most influenced your decision to work with kids?
I think I was most influenced from Carol Crawford Smith, owner of The Center of Dance in Blacksburg. While attending Virginia Tech, I taught ballet to all ages from 3 to adult classes. I loved the diversity of working with all ages. Carol was such an inspiration and her passion for sharing her love of dance greatly impacted me. I always looked forward to teaching classes and choreographing pieces for performances. I’ll never forget some of the faces of the younger kids when they experienced dancing on stage for the first time.
If you weren't a counselor, what would you be doing instead? I can see myself working with a nonprofit organization promoting the arts and working with kids. My mom is an artist and my dad recently retired from working in local government for a long time. I’ve definitely been influenced by their backgrounds, work ethic and love for our community.
What's your favorite North Cross tradition? What connects you to the school? I love Grandparents Day! I think our school does a wonderful job coordinating a special morning for our students and special family members. Our daughter Grace will be attending North Cross next year as an ECP 1 student (Dr. Proctor is super jazzed that she'll be the third generation Hamlin to go here!). Both of our families are in Roanoke and play a huge role in her life. I can’t wait to see how proud she is to show off her grandparents (although they prefer not to use that name) to her classmates and teachers!
