Where did you grow up? Salem, VA
What’s your teaching passion? What motivates you? I love the "lightbulb moment" when a student has worked hard to understand a concept and I can see it clicking in place. Being able to see all that hard work and effort turn into learning is hands down the best part of my job. My passion is building relationships with my students and helping all students be the best versions of themselves.
Who most influenced your decision to teach? I had a professor at Tech who encouraged me to do some tutoring for the athletic department. I don't know that I was the very good at it, but those experiences planted the seed. It took me a couple years to go after it.
When you're listening to music, who's playing? I love all genres of music, but some of my favorites are The Avett Brothers, Dave Matthews Band, Grace Potter, and basically anything I can sing loudly to in my car.
If you didn't teach, what would you be doing instead? My undergraduate degree was in communication, so maybe I would be a reporter or in public relations. But I really can't imagine doing anything but what I am doing right now! I was just thinking walking into school the other day after the long weekend how lucky I am to have a job I look forward to doing every day.
What's your favorite North Cross tradition? I love the Fat Pencil ceremony. I think there is something so special about the seniors being able to share their favorite memories. But I am a crier, so pass the tissues, please. :-)
When your students move to the next grade, what is the most important lesson you want them to have learned? My obvious hope is that they have learned (and will remember) what I taught them! Also I hope that they have learned to work cooperatively and with many different types of people. That is a very important life skill to have.
