Almost fifty years ago, North Cross was a charter member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) and we have maintained our accreditation since then. VAIS is chartered by the Commonwealth's legislature as one of the few organizations responsible for the oversight of private schools in the Virginia. In addition, VAIS undergoes a rigorous examination of its accrediting practices by the National Association of Independent Schools and is one of only twelve regional accrediting agencies recognized by the national body. As such, accreditation provides North Cross permission from the Commonwealth to operate a private school, as well as the national accreditation required by colleges and universities who accept our students.
You will hear us talking about accreditation all fall but it actually begins tomorrow! I am flying to Shanghai tomorrow morning with two members of our accrediting team to visit our Xinhe campus. While in Shanghai, our two visitors will interview faculty, staff, and students, as well as review the necessary documents. The goal is to ensure that our operating practices there are consistent with our school mission and will promote a successful sustainability.
While accreditation represents a burden on our faculty and staff, it is an important part of our goal to become the best independent school in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Think of accreditation as our ERB’s, a test that measures how well we are doing by comparing us to best practices in the industry. We have to know how we stack up against others in order for us to know how far we have to go.
