This week, seventh graders in Sandy Patterson's Life Science class took to the woods on campus to collect insects to help train their observation skills. The day after collection, the students placed all of their specimens in a tank, and among amplified recorded sounds of the deciduous forest, students spent 20 minutes silently observing their catches.
Through this exercise, students begin to recognize the difference between true observation and inference, that is, watching truthfully instead of reaching a conclusion on the basis of evidence and reasoning. Scientists aim for the least amount of interference when observing so as to capture a subject's natural behavior. Though some could argue being in a tank with a group of kids staring at you is far from their natural habitat, students did their best to stay true to their task and "watch and learn."
